Harry Paul, East End Boxer

The most recent "Cockney Ancestor" cover shows the celebrated East End Boxer, Harry PAUL on the left of the picture.

He was born at 147 Eastfield Street, Limehouse in 1875 and was the son of a rope-maker called William Richard Yew (a misspelling of Hugh) PAUL and Margaret COAP (COPE).

He was baptised and registered as Richard Henry Paul, signed his name Henry, but was known to everyone as Harry. The name Richard only reappeared once, ninety years later, on his death certificate.

Harry was the youngest of 11 known children and his father died when Harry was nine years old.

His full story is described in "Cockney Ancestor" number 141, Winter Edition on page 4.

We have been contacted by his grandson, Nick Paul, who would like to get in touch with anyone who is related.
